Solstice is upon us and it is actually not a favorite time for me. Yes I am in love with the weather and the simplicity of the summer days and nights, but I can’t help but be a glass-is-half-empty kind of gal when I think about how our daylight is gradually lessening now.  At the back of my mind is the knowledge of the longest season creeping closer and nudging this simple time of year away.  It’s an almost sinister feeling.  Seems that I should be embracing our gorgeous green season without feeling haunted.

Truly I don’t go around moping, and one of the favorite things that we do these days is plan meals and cook together.  We’re really enjoying in-season produce and late dinners on the back porch.  It’s such a pleasure to have SJ & Char to help brainstorm and put it all together in a leisurely manner as compared to the school-year calendar frenzied weeknight schedule.

Yesterday, after morning chores, we started out picking at our favorite strawberry field, owned by Clear Brook Farm, just enough to have for dessert and snacking.  In 10 minutes we had almost 3 pounds of sweet fruits, organically grown, embodying a June day in their warm little berry-selves. Our end of the day thunder-storm cooled things off, and following a tasty dish of quinoa & spicy shrimp, fresh greens and corn, the berries created my kind of night-cap over a homemade angel food cake.  You’re welcome to click on the captions to get the recipes on another page.

Today, after such a soaker, will be a great early-morning weeding in the garden.  I’m so excited!

Please!  Could we just keep it like this all year-long?!
