American Poet Laureate Billy Collins answered Grace Cavalieri’s interview about Snow Day in 2001 with “Snow Day is about that time when it snows so much that the day is declared by some “official” to be a snow day for schools, and then our lives change in a certain way.”

Today we woke up to a revolution of snow,
its white flag waving over everything,
the landscape vanished,
not a single mouse to punctuate the blankness,

We had one of those days here in Vermont.  And I loved it.  There weren’t any kids here to make snowflakes, cocoa or snow sculptures, but our critters made plenty of their own versions of snow angels and I spent nearly the entire day outside in the deep, white fluff we accumulated.  A foot of snow so far?

How did my life change, in a certain way…I’m uncertain.

There was a brief foray into the village to mail packages, eavesdropping on some local coffee klatsch and chit chat in the post office, providing insight into the lives of my community.  Compassion for dear Thistle, the Shetland ram, who shares a (temporarily) frozen hoof with Cricket, the Springer Spaniel, who limps on a (temporarily) frozen paw.

Mainly I observed quiet.  Snow falling, snow piling, white and soft and bright and cold quiet. Even the sheep were quiet today.
